I would suggest using the newest version of Opencart. Also, inquire about them upgrading to a newer version of php. I believe OC1.5.6 has a minimum of PHP 5.3, so 1.5.5 maybe 
BTW even 5.4 is already deprecated, the latest current versions are 5.5 and 5.6 with 7 around the corner (they skipped 6)
I suggest to force your host to do their (home)work or move to a decent one. Thing is that many extensions use php functions that are assuming at least 5.3/4 nowadays. You would run into many issues staying on 5.2!
Also it literally takes 5 minutes to upgrade a php version

i would suggest you to use v1.5.6.4 as the PHP version requirement is 5.2 and above as stated on the Opencart Documentation http://docs.opencart.com/requirements/
