More like devolved. You've got to remember that a lot of words in the English language came from somewhere else. After all, England was invaded by just about every other European country. Julius Caesar was there in 55BC, the Saxons arrived from Germany later on. Then there were the Danes from Denmark, the French (1066). Even the royal family has German origins. They changed their family name from Sachs-Coburg to Windsor during the First World War.Qphoria wrote:Very true.. we've evolved it.. .removing excess "u"s from words like humour and colour and words like "muchly"
Also, you need to take into account the derivation of the word. For example the word "font" in relation to typefaces. Metal type was cast in foundries and was known as "Founder's Type", which was abbreviated to "fount". You Americans dropped the "u". Why? Was it because there might be some religious implications? (You find a "fount" in churches, but this was derived from "fountain"). Or, is it just sheer laziness?
And then there's abbreviations. You Americans, so we are led to believe through TV shows and movies, do "math". How do you do that? The word "math" is an abbreviation of "mathematical". How do you "do" mathematical? You can do "maths", but you can't do "math". "Maths" is an abbreviation of "mathematics", a plural word, as it involves more than one number. The rules of the English language state that the abbreviation of a plural remains plural.
When I was at school, a billion was a million millions. Today, because Americans can't count, it's only a thousand million.
Nothing personal, you understand.

Same can be said or America and Texas... but I digress.
Hope your treatment is coming along. I was 'lucky' in that mine was Thyroid Papillary Carcinoma and fairly easy to kill via surgery and Iodine radiation pills. 3 clear tests in a row and the Oncologist (which NO one should have) doesn't want to see me for a year. I was initially stage 1 and then 3 but seemed to have beat it with great surgeons and doctors in general.
