Gettext is perfect solution for translations. I suggest to move all translations of static texts (labels, buttons, etc) to getext and variable texts to database.

why put more work on the db ...  files loaded by what is required and runs fast...  better then other solution out there in parse time...  IMO

The current system is more flexible too and presents a user interface (text files and a gui for database entities) more familiar to typical users rather than programmers.

All it lacks is a decent fallback mechanism when values/files are not found.

I would prefer if there was one language file per language. There are not that many different words used - but they are repeated in dozens of files.
