I am in the process of trying to sort out a problem related to shipping. I would like to offer FREE Shipping promotions on ground shipping only. Is there a way to do this directly in OpenCart or do I need to purchase somesort of extension. If I need to purchase an extension, which would would be best?

OpenCart has a built-in Free Shipping method, with its own total setting (so it won't be available until after that total). If you need further restrictions on when Free Shipping is available, take a look at Category & Product-Based Shipping, which can offer free shipping (i.e. a 0.00 rate) on a variety of criteria, including category or product.
