Database Upgrade from 1.5.2.1?

Hi All

I am looking to create a brand new website on the latest version of open cart but use the database from 1.5.2.1 but i am unsure how to go about it.. i cannot do a direct upgrade from 1.5.2.1 to the latest version as i just found out

I would be interested to hear either or both of the following solutions

use complete database from 1.5.2.1 and install it into a fresh install of the latest version of open cart

or

install a fresh copy of open carts latest version and then only add the customer details from the database currently on 1.5.2.1

I think this might be the best solution for me as i may well completely redo all the products and categories etc

Can anyone offer me any advice on how best to do this please?
