I don't know if that link will be there in the long term but here is a quote:
UPS plans to expand dimensional-weight pricing, which determines cost by measuring exterior package size, beginning Dec. 29. Shipping prices are based on dimensional weight if it exceeds the actual weight.
Anyone have any thoughts about how this will affect them? Personally I have about 1/2 of our 4K products that have dimensions. For us it'll be quite a pain to get the other 1/2 and then keep up with the new products.

I wonder how this will force a change in the UPS extension currently in OpenCart?

I would imagine there will still be an option to get a rate solely based on weight. I'd be surprised if they required dimensions, since that would be a major change in how some people utilize their rating API.
