OpenCart / Joomla!

OK! I have a new client, who wants a brand new site - NO legacy code anywhere :-)

They want a sweet shopping solution - OC - which is the MAIN aim of the site.

They want lots of fun content - Jooma!

What's the best way of integrating OC with J! ?

What are the alternatives?

You'd be better off using MijoShop, which is a plugin to Joomla that allows the use of pretty much all OpenCart modules & themes.

What's the purpose of another shop to drive OC? Bit confusing for a newbie!

It is confusing.

Someone decided that they wanted to combine Joomla + OpenCart into one thing, as if Joomla wasn't bloated enough already. Anyway, that seems to be ideal for you where you need to mix the two.

Yup - bloatedness is the right word, especially when you add two extensions to achieve one goal!

Philosophically I vere towards a single solution - and until there is a native OC extension for J!, which would get a lot of people V excited, I think the natural choice at the moment is HikaShop, isn't it?

Not familiar with Hikashop.

I really, really dislike Joomla so I don't have any strong feelings one way or the other.

I know where you are coming from re Joomla!

Just from an Admin interface perspective, OC is always a breath of fresh air!

Will OV v2 have many more CMS-type facilities, do you know? That would be neat.

OpenCart v2 is slated for quite a few improvements.

From what I understand:
- bootstrap will be the front-end framework.
- VQMOD will be brought into core, and a module system similar to wordpress will be added

that's what piqued my interest, I couldn't find the thread on a search - but it's around somewhere.

Exactly, don't do it. You can think of it as joomla with opencart imprisoned within mijoshop and joomla I have big problems with mijoshop since I took my shop to hosted server. Ex: I csn not use the shopping cart at all since it keeps asking for an Opencart log in AND mijoshop portion is asking for my personal id, evev though it is existing. Service by mijoshop is poor, even before the subscription period is over. After that, they could not care less. I am working to -hopefully-get completely on Opencart instead without having to redo my site. Go with OC.

Not for much longer, the developers have been promoting that mijoshop will no longer follow OC and its extensions. Going forward, any extensions must be mijoshop compatible only. See their blog info...

Although MijoShop is by far the most well-known Joomla-OpenCart integration (and if you absolutely need that, I'd go with it) I agree with kimbo that it's often more trouble than it's worth. If you want just a default OpenCart installation, it should work fine for you. But if you're looking at extending OpenCart with extensions, then you're likely going to run into trouble. Although MijoShop states compatibility with extensions, it's pretty hit-or-miss -- and when they update, it's possible to break extensions that you may have installed.

If the main point of the site is informational, then start with Joomla. If the main point is e-commerce, start with OpenCart, and then extend from there. There are a huge number of extensions for adding functionality to OpenCart, and many of them can add CMS features like Joomla has.
