Weight-based Shipping?

I've seen posts about "weight-based shipping", but I can't figure out how to use it.
Until recently, we have not sold any items requiring shipping-- so "Free Shipping" is the site default.
(although now I can't even find where THAT setting is)
I've enabled & set "Flat Rate Shipping", and now I'd like to disable "Free Shipping" on any item that requires shipping.
Do I have to buy another module to make that happen?

When using weight based shipping, you would use the following settings:

0-1kg = $2.00
1-5kg = $6.50
5-10kg = $10.00
10-20kg = $35.00
20kg+ = $50.00

You would use the following rates:
1:2.00,5:6.50,10:10.00,20:35.00,999999:50.00

Free Shipping can be found under:
Admin CP > Extensions > Shipping

I would recommend that if a product doesn't require shipping, that you choose "Requires Shipping: No" in the product settings. This means that no shipping option will load on products that don't require shipping, and the customer will not be asked to fill in their delivery information. This will also mean you can disable Free Shipping so that it doesn't appear on products that require shipping.

This was a CLASSIC example of "Don't know what I don't know"!
I changed the shipping setting on all products, and disabled Free Shipping...
Now, when I add a product to the cart that requires shipping, the "Flat Rate" option appears, pre-checked--
BUT IT IS NOT BEING ADDED TO THE TRANSACTION BEFORE PASSING TO PAYPAL.
What am I missing (that I don't know I'm missing)?

Did you set up your geo zones for it? When you have doubts (before you k-n-o-w there is an actual problem), see Documentation top center, and check the tutorials (the entries with light bulbs and some with circles) near the tops of forums and subforums. The geo zones tie various kinds of things (taxes, shipping, etc.) and their rates together with customer locations.
