Can anyone recommend web host for my site. I'm currently with 123reg and they are saying I have to move to a VPS - whatever that is - as they aren't able to deal with it. As this would cost in excess of £70 a month and sales aren't great at the moment, I'm a small independent retailer - would find it hard to quantify that sort of cost.
I'm presently on Linux unlimited package with 123reg but presume the slow speed is down to the amount of images I have on the site. Which I find a bit odd as also have my old site www.llph.co.uk hosted on same package with Webfusion (one and the same as far as i can see) which has far more and much bigger images and loads normally.
My main problem is the slowness of my site, which I know is losing me a lot fo customers. I only get to hear about the ones who ring to tell me, so heaven knows how many are just leaving the site after losing patience.
Any advice would be more than welcome. I should add I'm not a techie and also quite old so please be gentle....

you may wish to get a server nearer to your targeted customers. Example, if they are at US, you will get a server at US. If they are at Hong Kong, you will get one nearer to there. That will be better in terms of speed serving them. If you are still facing speed issues, try using google cloud or amazon.
If you really need to move to a VPS, there must be a reason giving for the recommendation. Speed, or just resource usage? Find out more about that before you start moving everything in a rush

Sorry should have mentioned my opencart site www.seat-pads.co.uk.
123reg are based in UK so can't think that's the problem as most of my customers are in the UK.
123reg are saying I have to remove some of the plugins and addons, as well as scripts and images. As I haven't bought any I'm a bit mystified. Think it's the amount and sizes of images I have on the site that may be the problem. So if anyone knows of a way to shrink images without affecting quality that can be done in batches as there are thousands would be good to hear from them

Jean,
Contact your web host and find out specifically why they suggested you move. It could have just been "upselling" trying to get you to buy a more expensive service, or you may have outgrown the account type you have now.
Also if they say you are bumping up on limits of filespace or bandwidth, ask your web host for specifics about that - they can give you a list of the biggest files or tell you how to get that list. Frequently this will be a mail folder that you did not empty for years, maybe didn't even know you had, and it's chock-full of junk mail.
Let us know and we can help further.

I can recommend csnewmedia.co.uk as a host, nobody I know has ever had an issue with them and they're not too far from you either. You can always drop them an email about limits but highly doub they will be telling you to strip your website, they will allow you to go over your limits slightly but then you will have to upgrade to another package or work something out.
