add new fields in delivery details

hi, i am new here.. just need your help.. can u tell me how to add new fields in delivery details section of checkout in open cart?? such as, "phone" fields?
really appreciate it..

edit relevant controllers, models and views in checkout directory.

I also want to add a new field to the shipping details (delivery date) - but is it possible to add that field automatically by installing the relevant extension & not having to edit the models, views & controllers? something like plug & play.
