Hello all,
I recently decided to use opencart instead of zencart, i must say it looks like it would be really awesome and amazing, only i cant even get it off the ground, my issue is my themes, it WILL NOT SWITCH FROM DEFAULT i installed about 8 different themes all for the current version, themes that worked for many other people, not me, i reinstalled about opencart 10 times or more still no luck, i searched high and low, google, this forum, other forums, blogs files, file manager, everything in my ftp, multiple themes, i searched thru the dashboard so many times i have everything memorized, one of the most frustrating things about this besides it putting my business on hold, ive found numerous many many threads about this issue, no one has ever posted a solution, im talking about 15+ threads, with no solution to this problem.
threads like these for example.
http://forum.opencart.com/viewtopic.php?t=65348
http://forum.opencart.com/viewtopic.php?t=65392
http://forum.opencart.com/viewtopic.php?t=31412
the first one even says solved, its not solved, the last reply in the thread is another person asking for help with this issue... you think someone woulda helped him, it seems with all these threads the ball has been dropped and they were forgotten about or put off.. this is really frustrating to me.
so anyway, i would like to know what i can try, and i would like to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible, and if and when i figured out whats wrong, i would gladly post how to fix this issue, if someone doesn't post it by helping me, i do think there should be atleast 1 thread with this issue and how to fix it out of the many of them with no answer, as im sure (seeing from many many threads over 15 of them...) many people will run into this problem like a brick wall... and could use this thread as help/reference with resolving the issue, hell i seem to have hit this wall at 120miles per hour.. haha.
anyway i know this thread kinds makes me sound like i am a little ticked off, but im just frustrated and very tired of this..
if anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated and i would be VERY thankful of whoever can help me fix this issue.
no matter what, the theme will not change from default.
please help,
thanks,
E-Juice

You really need to give more information about how the themes are not working, but in general:
Make sure the theme you are trying to use is for the version of opencart you have installed.
Unzip the theme onto your local computer and connect to your store's opencart folder via an FTP program.
Upload the new theme to catalog/view/theme
some themes also have javascript or other components. If the are in x folder in the unzipped theme folder, upload it to x folder in your store folders (match them to the same folder)
Then in your admin panel, in system > settings > storeyouwant to use the theme, Select the store tab and choose your new template in the template dropdown menu. Save.
Your template should now be seen in the front end. If not, post more specifically what is not working about your theme and the url to the store you are trying to use it on.
You should also read up on layouts and at the minimal, you will probably want to create a new layout for each stores homepage so you can set up different slideshows, modules on each store.

Running Opencart v3.0.3.9 with multi-stores and the default template from https://www.labeshops.com which has links to all my stores.
I'm having a similar issue with changing from the default theme in opencart.
I can see the all installed themes in the drop down, with default selected initially. When I select a new them, it freezes whilst it loads, then when it does load the admin login appears forcing me to re-login. When I login in again the settings haven't been saved and it's back to default, so I can't change the theme...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Never seen an issue like that myself. What version of opencart are you using?
If you have any admin extensions installed, try deactivating them, clear all caches, and see if you still have the problem.

Opencart version is 1.5.3
I disabled all the extensions under the extension tab, and tried to change the theme and the same problem occurred.
In the store tab, the theme is default. I have two other options for a theme, and when either of them are chosen the admin login fields appear where the preview should be, quite frustrating.

im having a totally different issue here, i would appreciate it if you did make your own thread, not trying to be mean buy ive been working on this for 4 days now,
i thought i pretty much gave alot of information, www.ecig-plus.com is the store, theres only 1 store i only want 1 shop i dont need anymore then 1 shop, on the main shop in question, in the theme selection, i have the themes ive installed in the drop down, after i select one of the themes, aside from the default, there is a black photo for the preview, i click save, it saves the information, there is no admin page problems or login problems like whats going on with ssnsep, thats why i had asked him to make his own thread, i dont want to make this more confusing then it is, its a very simple problem.
anyway when i select the theme, and save it, and delete my chache and try to reload the page at www.ecig-plus.com it still shows me the default theme, i log back into the admin dashboard, go to the theme options and the theme i previously selected is still selected, so i have the theme in the drop down "black" selected, yet when i load the store it show the default theme, no matter what i do,
yes i know kind of what i am doing, like i said earlyer i had 8 different themes, they all are for the current version of opencart i have installed, ive reinstalled open cart several times with still no luck.. everything seems to be in order, everything functions, besides when i change the themes they wont change from the default theme, in the drop down list of themes that will change it will save it will stay the same, but the actually visual of the theme when you reload the page will not change, yes like i said i kind of know what im doing, all history/cache/cookies were deleted the themes are the right themes for the current version of opencart, if someone wants to, you can PM me your skype or other contact info, i would be happy to show someone this on teamviewer..
its very frustrating, the versions are right the themes are installed or should be installed properly everything is in the right director there is no x folder or javascript from what i see, that is not the issue anyone, the opencart does not want to change themes even tho in the dashboard it says it has been changed.
so anyway if someone wants to help me we can talk thru skype i can show you this on temviewer, when we do fix the problem i will gladly post the solution.
and sorry if i sound edgy or mean ssnsep, but i feel like i need all the help i can get right now, and you bringing other technical issues into my thread is not going to help me any, its just going to delay my problem. so no hard feelings but will you kindly make your own thread since we have 2 different issues?
thanks everyone.

Well, let's play process of elimination.
1.) It's not OpenCart, as not everyone is experiencing it.
2.) According to you, you are doing everything right, which would eliminate user error. But there is really no way someone can verify that unless you give them access to your hosting so they can check it out or try to install everything from the beginning to make sure it really is set up correctly.
3.) It could be a hosting issue, but we don't really know who your host is as you didn't mention it.
Those are the only 3 things I can think of that would be causing the problem. I would recommend you start with number 2. If you want I can have a look at your set up and see if there truly is no user error. PM me if needed.

Has anybody found a solution to this problem? I am having the exact same problem. I have the theme installed under catalog > view > theme > THEMENAME
The theme shows up on the admin panel, but when I switch it from default and hit save. The store front still displays the default theme without taking the change.
The error logs are empty.

I installed the theme under catolog > view > theme > THEMENAME
When I try to change the theme from the admin panel, the theme name shows up but does not take the change after hitting save. The store front still displays the default theme.
I have checked the error logs and they are empty. The version of the theme is compatible with the opencart version.

I found the problem on my system. It was a security problem.
I was copying the files (as so often) by file copy to the public_html folder.
So as user I was able to work on the file system but the webserver was not having the permission to read the files.
I hope this help also some more people.

I have the same problem as the theme is appearing in the admin but not on store front. I think all free themes will not work properly. Did waste two days on this so if someone has a solution please post it here. Or I think this is just some prank from the company
I have read all of this and still "que pasa".
I am new to OC but not totally clueless with experience with Joomla.
I installed theme. I reinstalled theme.
It shows up in store.
It stays on default after saving, still showing theme name.
The Theme is commercial. OK with 100% compatible with the newest version of OpenCart: 1.5.2.1 / 1.5.3.1 / 1.5.4.1
I installed v1.5.4.1 yesterday.
Any suggestions
Thanks

# Copying 'default' theme and renaming to my own custom theme ready to customise #
I fell foul to this problem as well, I solved it by checking basically file paths and avoiding copy/paste of "default" folder in Dreamweaver. I'll enlighten you...
I firstly downloaded the 'default' theme folder from the server in Dreamweaver using FTP. I then copied this folder, while still in Dreamweaver, to 'Copy of default'. I then renamed this folder to 'mytheme'.
Problem: Dreamweaver re-wrote all urls / links within pages to reference /theme/Copy of default/ and did not change them to reflect my new theme name, 'mytheme' when I renamed the folder.
Solution: Don't copy and paste the 'default' folder inside Dreamweaver. Copy it through your desktop system.
Secondly I found that many of the template files referenced the 'default' theme in various places. So using Dreamweaver I performed a find and replace for: /theme/default/ and replaced with /theme/mytheme/ on all template files (In dreamweaver you can select the 'template' folder and tell the find and replace tool to check 'selected files in site').
Once I did this, I had a virtual copy of the default theme ready to customise.
If you installed a downloaded theme and you get this problem, I'd hazard a guess that maybe the template files are pointing to the default theme folder, or check that your folder permissions on your new theme folder are not restricted.
This may assist anyone researching this issue, as it did me.
