Paypal Standard creating orders as abandoned [SOLVED]

I can't fix my IPN problem and think I'll have to give up - I can receive payments through Paypal Standard but all orders are created as 'abandoned'. I have cURL installed and Paypal supposedly uses port 80 for the IPN stuff so I can't see how it could be firewalled. The IPN history on the Paypal site shows 'retrying', I've spent 2weeks trying to get this working now. Payment is received but customers don't receive order confirmations and in debug mode there is no IPN traffic showing at all. OC version is 1.51.

Is there a way to force Paypal Standard to set all orders received as 'Pending' and send a confirmation email regardless? I know when I've been paid as I get an email and it shows up in Paypal.

Alternatively, any suggestions for fixing the problem rather than this dirty hack? I've just noticed that the notification URL being used by Paypal has a : after the TLD - http://site.com:/store/index.php?route= ... d/callback - could that break it?

Hi thanks for the reply - I've read the article (and many others on here) but it didn't help. My error log is blank except for a couple of 'permission denied' errors for /store/system/library/session.php. Debug has been on since day #1 as well. Paypal is not even giving a http response code which is making me think it's a problem with the notification URL?

YES IT WORKS! I'm using a VPS and I installed OpenCart through CPanel. When it created the config files it put the URL as being http://shop.com:/store/ - note the colon after the TLD. I stripped all these out, put through a test order and everything worked! I guess the colon was breaking PayPal - the IPN history now shows 'sent' and the order is 'pending' in OC.

If this is the way WebFusion's VPS sets up OpenCart I guess there will be others with the same problem. I had a support ticket raised with them, I'll let them know the outcome. Thanks for being there to bounce ideas off, you honestly have no idea how happy I am right now!
