Bot spamming seems to be an increasing issue on the board lately. This one has just managed to spam over 380 posts in a couple minutes and is still going. The signup captcha should really be strengthened or flood control implemented.

We'll need to add a captcha to post for your first 5-10 posts

I think the reason might be because all of the IP addresses that had been banned are now unbanned. I just noticed this when I banned two more, and found that those are the only ones on there. Did Daniel do this on purpose?

I vote for flood control for regular users, not admins or those who help a lot.

Any comment from Daniel on why he unbanned all the IP addresses? And I assume this means moderators should stop banning IP addresses?

Daniel hates the thought of people not being able to find opencart. My guess is he feels IPs change often enough that after some time, the spammers IP has likely changed anyway so it could be that some innocent person looking to get on opencart gets assigned that previously banned IP and is denied legitimate access. And it is more than likely that the IP has changed by now anyway. You can still ban new IPs but there is little benefit in keeping old ones banned for too long. Changing IPs is easy enough anyhow.. most people can simply do a ipconfig release/renew and get a new one or use one of the billions of proxy ips out there.

I agree.

We should make i harder for Bots to register (mostly this is done by humans and then they release a bot) and flood control or captcha for the first 10 posts or so.

IMHO

Set new user registration to Activation by admin, set max post new user, and install this modification:

Code: Select all

http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/advanced_block_mod/
Manually banning IP addresses is useless (Waste of time).

It looks like this issue is still outstanding as a bot just created several hundred (thousand?) threads/posts in a matter of minutes.

What happened to the one-click ban, as well? I'm sure that's why they haven't been deleted, too.

What!?

I guess I believe it. ;D

Good to know. However, is there also a max number of post up to which it's available? One bot (referrerirola) just posted 305 posts, and there's no one-click ban link on their user page.

That I see before on another user as well.

This morning a spam-user had over 200 posts, I used the One click ban and after that a Server 500 Error showed.

The user was not banned, no One Click Ban option, the topics looked to be there but they were just the titles as when clicking them you would get "This topic does not exist" showed.
