I have had similar problems for some time now, and I don't have the solution, all I know is it's to do with the Paypal IPN system.
I started off with such high hopes for Opencart, but these have faded by now...

There are no known issues with paypal standard. People have issues with their servers but the fact is, if it works for one person out of the box, then it works! It works fine for 99% of users. We can't control poorly configure webhosts.

mine has worked for a very long time until I upgraded to new opencart 1.5.2.1 which seems to have a new paypal standard module which no longer uses the PDT response.

My orders are now all coming up as abandoned as well NOW with the NEW version. Instead of telling people the server is not configured properly can you look into the issue with compatibility? I have had senior Hostgator admins going through everything and can't see anything wrong or any connection problems.

Now I get

Code: Select all

2012-04-19 20:03:52 - PP_STANDARD :: CURL failed SSL connection timeout(28)
2012-04-19 20:03:52 - PP_STANDARD :: IPN REQUEST: cmd=_notify-validate&mc_gross_*******
2012-04-19 20:03:52 - PP_STANDARD :: IPN RESPONSE:

Can a poorly made SQL call from this be causing the problem? I upgraded mysql this morning to latest version and now it gave me that somewhat more detailed response of it's stopping.

This means your webhost has a problem with curl:
CURL failed SSL connection timeout(28)
This means your database is flaky and mysql crashed
Error: MySQL server has gone away
Both are server issues unrelated to opencart.
PDT only affects the redirect from the browser side. IPN has always been the main trigger for order update.

And there was never an issue before upgrading to 1.5.2.1 from 1.5.1.3

I can run curl https://www.paypal.com and see paypal html
