Seeking an easy to understand multiple ship solution

Working with version 1.4.9.4
I am using weight for shipping but I'm struggling to get it right because the first items are always heavier than additional ones.
I cant seem to find a structure to incorporate everything
I'm not sure if I'm able to use per item shipping instead
Any suggestions?

You'll probably want to use something like Jonathan's "Category Based Shipping", this way you can set rates for each category of products.

I'm a bit nervous to change anything as I'm not so program savvy.
I don't want to alter or add too much in case I mess up.
Is there an easy walk through help for those less familiar with programming languages?

Without some heavy modification to the Per Item shipping extension, your best bet is to use a third party extension.

You could always make a backup before installing an extension. I doubt you will have any issues with it though as Jonathan has been developing for OpenCart for some time.

If you're unsure about his extension, perhaps try contacting him and maybe he could help you out further.

I've tried reading up about it but get lost in it all.

I'm OK with html and css and stuff like that but when it comes to programming it's a language that I'm less familiar.

Isn't there a complete idiots guide to installing modules etc?
