Please can anyone recommend a payment gateway that will work in South Africa?
One where the price can be in rand?

Payfast is a pretty reputable supplier - with live support.
There is a once of licence for the module to integrate the system into Opencart, and you can find it at its cheapest from opencartguru.com for 35USD the last time i checked.
I stay in South Africa too, and just went through the battle your facing now..
all you will need is a payfast account (no monthly charges)
and ZAR added to your currency list (preferably only ZAR)
