Is there any Mod, or tool in Admin, that will either close the shop down over Christmas or give a pop-up message that would inform the shopper that orders wont be shipped till such and such a time?
Any advise/help appreciated

Or, alternatively, use "Maintenance" mode. You can change the message displayed in the language file (catalog/language/english/common/maintenance.php).

If you're not living on the edge ... you're taking up too much space!
I think I like the welcome message better, as the customer can still browse the items, purchase them with the delayed shipping if they like, and Google will still see everything
