Just grab some of the code from the controller file catalog/controller/product/special.php and put it into home.php.
Then grab the code from the catalog/view/theme/default/template/product/special.tpl file and place it in catalog/view/theme/default/template/common/home.tpl instead of the latest product code.

Attached is a folder with the three modified homepage files to display Specials INSTEAD of Latest Products. All you need to do is unzip and upload to your site, overwriting the files - the directory structure is intact.
After you've entered a few Specials, you should get a homepage that looks similar to this:

I am interested in having the latest and special products on the home page... i've been playing around with the code in this topic but have yet to get it to work...
