Alright so I tested opencart's mail system on version 1.5.1.3.1. Turns out I didn't find any of the emails because Gmail put them all into the spam box automatically. So this is apparently a big problem.
Of course I can tell Gmail that it's not spam, but my customers won't know that. The mail from Opencart is basic text and the header contains a "VIA" which means it's a third party mail service. Again, this kind of stuff is commonly how spammers send their emails. It's nice how Opencart is doing the same thing as spammers in its email feature.
Is there a way to deal with this problem?
Are you using your domain mail server where you installed the opencart or something else. You should use the domain email server rather than using the 3rd party mail server to send email. The mail from Opencart is basic text and the header contains a "VIA" which means it's a third party mail service
My domain's mail server is mail.myserver.com but the mail shows up as via gator1662.hostgator.com. If I get Hostgator to give me my own server ip's mail server, will this help? The mail is still sent as pure text via an automated method, much like spam mails.
If you are on linux hosting just set the mail to MAIL and remove all the other settings and you are good to go. It will use your servers sendmail and there won't be a via in there. Is there a reason you set it up to use SMTP instead? it's more of a hassle to set it up that way and doesn't work as well.

I already used the default MAIL option for OpenCart. It used the server's mail function and all emails said "from xxx@domain.com via hostgator.com".Xsecrets wrote:If you are on linux hosting just set the mail to MAIL and remove all the other settings and you are good to go. Changing it to SMTP resulted in the via etc removed.
Both methods work. The problem is all mails sent out by OpenCart go into Gmail's SPAM. The hosting service's webmail on the other hand works just fine.
