EDIT: Sorry! Using 1.4.9.6!

Is there a way to add this ability easily? Or has anyone done a mod that does this (haven't found one yet).

It would be vastly useful for me to be able to filter and pull up all orders that contain a particular item when viewing orders.

The extension "Sales Report (Export Sort Filter) 15x" allows you to export orders to excel, then sort them any way you wish.

That's a possibility. -EDIT- Or not, that's for 1.5x, my mistake, I forgot to include the version in my post. Fixed -

Ideally though, I'd like to just tell it to show me all orders containing item "X" in the actual admin console. It doesn't need to have the actual items displayed in a column anywhere like it does for customer name, etc. just being able to add a pair of dropdowns above the bar where the current filter options are that contain the categories and the items, like is used in various other places in the back end, in order to select what to filter for, would be swell.
