All this editing of files is nonsens. After a upgrade all is back and you have to remove it over and over again.
I may be totally thick but... I can't get to catalog/view/theme/yourtheme/template/common/footer.tpl
I'm in the back of the website and when I select catalog the word 'view' isn't an option from the list that drops down. Am I trying to look at the wrong thing?

yeah @MinusTen you're on the administration panel of your store. what they were talking about was you have to access the files of your store. Go to your folder manager in your cpanel and from there navigate to the mentioned directory.
I've downloaded footer.tpl with Filezilla but when I open it in notepad it just reads:
Mac OS X 2‰»ATTR»˜#˜#com.apple.quarantineq/0002;520be491;The\x20Unarchiver;
I assume I've downloaded it incorrectly.
Any helps much appreciated.

You need to use the correct program to open the files...
Sublime Text Editor : http://www.sublimetext.com/2
Coffee Cup HTML Editor : http://www.coffeecup.com/free-editor/
Either one of those programs are able to open all opencart files (except images of course) and are available for Windows or Mac
