Hi all.

I've searched (sort of) but can't seem to find a basic guide for 1.5. Maybe it doesn't exist yet, and that's fine.

It's just that...well...how come my 'welcome' module appears at the top of all my pages?

A simple 'this is how layouts' work bit of help would be appreciated, or better still, a link to a guide if it exists.

Many thanks

Yes, see this page: http://www.opencart.com/index.php?route ... umentation
If your module is on every page, then you've set the "Layout" of the module to default, or another layout that is on every page
Go to EXTENSIONS > MODULES, click EDIT next to the WELCOME entry and then change the position on the module to the layout of your choice (e.g. Home)

Thanks Jay....except I don't think I have. :(

This is for LDWF that you might remember and I'm upgrading to 1.5

I've set my store default layout to 'Home' and I've set my welcome module layout to also be 'Home'

Without a guide it's tricky to work out what's what, so if you or anyone else could give me a quick couple of sentences on "Here's how layouts work" I'd appreciate it.

It would probably be useful for others too as this seems to be a major change in 1.5

Thanks
Steve

Yes, I wrote the user guide for OpenCart 1.5, see the link in my signature below. I also maintain the text documentation on Opencart.com.

Most answers are from my OpenCart 1.5 User Manual CURRENT TO 1.5.5.1 and includes free updates.

Well I'm certainly not going to complain about anyone willing to take on writing documentation, because lord knows I hate to do it, but just out of curiosity where did you come from? Never seen you on the forum before today, and you have access to the documentation portion of the site, which seems to be fairly well restricted. Are you a new part of the team?

Hi Xsecrets, I've been wondering about you too since I see you post a lot here. I've been writing OSC user manuals since 2003 when I published the first osCommerce user manual. Since then I've written and given away free Admin cheatsheets, free install guides, and free quickstart guides for ALL of the major OSC programs - Zen Cart, CRE Loaded, Magento, osCMAX, PrestaShop, TomatoCart and others.

After a program develops a while and stabilizes, I write the manual for end users, i.e. the clients of developers. My books bring a lot of newbie users to a program, and my readers expect a program to be stable so I have to wait that long. If you have ANY experience with similar programs, then you don't need my user manuals - my free guides are enough to be off and flying on any OSC program.

On OpenCart, I was waiting and watching for 1.5 to come out before publishing the user manual. I am forced to learn every feature of a program as I write, and I have to ask questions on the forum to do so. I try to repay the help I received by posting answers to questions that have had zero replies. I also find and report a good number of bugs.

I have previously been the documentation manager for CRE Loaded, writing all the free documentation on their website, and now I am doing the same for OpenCart.

I'm also a columnist on open source ecommerce topics. I wrote for Jupiter Media's Internet.com and SmallBusinessComputing.com for several years, then moved to PracticalEcommerce.com a year or so ago. I know a lot of people in the OSC industry because of this.

So now, Xsecrets, who are you? :-)

Well I'm just a developer who has been building stores and doing custom development on oscommerce based solutions (oscommerce/zen/creloaded) for around 7 years now. Mostly with another firm. Around a year and a half ago I was looking for a new ecommerce platform to work off of after seeing the disaster that Magento turned out to be I looked around and settled on OpenCart. I write commercial and custom modules for OpenCart, and whatever other php development tasks my clients need.

Okay everybody, I've finished updating the documentation section of opencart.com for 1.5! :-)

With Daniel's okay, I've also added a link to my fully-illustrated User Guide and the new Template Design Cookbook:

hey merry, you mean gracias , celestial. Don't you? LOL

You emailed me the place to get the guide, but I cannot find the email. Could you please send it again? Also, if you are looking for contributors, I am making some good headway adding jQuery code and other MVC to the OC system.

All my free guides are now bundled together into the user manual. They are still free, the whole front half of the book is free. If you like all the free guides support my work by buying the manual. Get them at http://oscmanuals.com.
