I downloaded default template, renamed and uploaded, and it is not showing in admin 7.9
I had downloaded one from this site, uploaded, it showed the first time I went to admin, then not the next
So in your catalog/template folder you have:
-default
-newname
and you goto Admin->Configuration->Settings->Shop Tab and the drop down for template only shows "default" ?
Not to be confused with the admin template selector on the Admin->Configuration->Settings->Admin Tab
