hmmm, I've had a dedicated server for the past few years and really have not used its full potential.
Maybe, hostgator is an option ... I only have a few domains so which which setup would you'all recommend?

For VPS I am using VPSVille. They have servers in Canada, US, UK. Seems like they made a few mistakes early but have addressed them in the past years. I have a VPS in Toronto and I can say it has been pretty solid since I joined and support have answered quickly when it has been needed. Managing your own server is not everyone's thing but I really like having total control over my server. Easy to upgrade service plans temporarily (especially if you expect a rush at Xmas) and then can downgrade again after the rush.

Usually I use hostgator. Much better and more comfortable then others.
Some time I use Godaddy also but most prefer first Hostgator. Very quick and reliable.

its weird to see that nobody mentioned above arvixe, which is opencart's official hosting partner. any remarks on them? coz im using them to host my store, but haven't used it to its full potential at the moment. so it would be great if anyone would give some comments on arvixe, before i get the 2 years plan from them.

Hey everyone,

I'm getting my store set up - and want to know what the standard ranking is among everyone on the following categories between HostGator Baby Plan, Arvixe (advertised here, and they say they have a ton of OpenCart hosting experience..does this matter?), InMotion Hosting Business Power plan, and SurpassHosting:
- Speed / performance
- Real customer service / support
- Features
- Uptime (anyone had any issues with the above companies?)
- Ease of use

Please rate each one you've had experience with on a scale from 1 (worst) to 10 (best) in each category.

I really appreciate your help!

Thank you,
Jared

I also consider GoDaddy to suck! It is so slow and i really don't like it! I think there are several hosting sites that are really good but then their you have to pay quite a bit of money. What do you think of this one: http://www.ixwebhosting.com/index.php/v2/pages.dspmain ? Does anyone have experience with this one?

Are you guys sure that Dreamhost is bad for Opencart? Is it not compatible?

I had bad experiences with Hostgator before so I don't want to go back to them. How about getting a cheap VPS from Dreamhost?

May I ask what bad experiences you had with Host Gator? I just ask because I decided to go with them, and want to know what to watch out for!

We've used A2 Hosting for the last couple of years and I'm pretty happy with them.

In Australia I've only used a few hosts but currently use Ilisys. They're great in some respects and extremely poor in others.

For example, their reseller pricing is competitive and their uptime is outstanding, but you can only have one FTP user per account and can't change usernames for hosting packages - they're randomly created which makes it hard to remember when I'm on the road and want to quickly FTP into a site.

Most frustrating of all is that they have some extremely tight security measures in place, so every time I want to install a CMS or any other script that writes to the server, I have to contact them to change the PHP temporary folder. It's ridiculous and surely given that I host 100+ sites they could relax the restrictions for me by default. You also have to contact them to get a staging area set up.

Their customer service has been lacking in the past but drastically improved in the past six months. Prior to that time, I had a conversation with someone in sales who lectured me about something even though I was 100% correct (can't remember the issue but they spoke to me like I was a child).

There's also very little control over individual hosting package management. How's this for crazy...

a) You can only assign one 'Package Manager' to your account (aside from yourself, of course).

b) The Package Manager can change anything they want (including seeing all email passwords). This means that an individual user can't go in and change their email password unless they're the Package Manager.

c) I can toggle which items the Package Manager can see (e.g. MySQL setup, email setup) but across ALL sites (i.e. every Package Manager for every website has the same settings). This means that there may be some trustworthy, knowledgable people who I'd like to be the Package Manager for a particular site, and other users who are complete novices, and yet they have the same level of access as each other.

d) You can't set limits on the storage or transfers for any packages. You can set notifications when certain levels are reached, but every package is basically unlimited storage/transfers (and the client has no way to check this themselves unless they're a Package Manager with appropriate permissions). So I can't charge any excess usage fees, either.

Am using dreamhost and I have no issues. Hosting more than 10 sites on my account. I have a site that uses over 1GB bandwidth per day, and my total backsups from my scripts are over 100GB and no issues, all on a shared account.

I don't know if their VPS really qualifies as a VPS...it seems they just give you more memory and cpu usage. I familiairised myself with their cpanel and it's great.

Am worried some of the posters above are recommending the hosting services that give high commissions, so be cautious when you see affiliate links posted above.

I've never actually never had a site on dreamhost, but I've moved about 5 or 6 clients off their servers, and each one took me almost a full day to pull down less than 100Mb because the server was so slow. That's why I don't ever recommend dreamhost because every experience I've had with them has been on servers that are so overloaded they are unusable.
