Are we limited to only using PayPal, Secure Pay, or Protx for payment method's? What about Authorize.net?

Note well that the SecurePay extension was posted only as an example of code and workflow for a payment extension that collected some information locally before processing.
I know that it does work because I use it. However it uses one-time periodic payments (only one of the possible interfaces to SecurePay) which are processed the next day, not in real time.
