php template engine Opencart

Can you help me.

I need to know if Smarty (.tpl) is the php template engine of opencart

I don't understand very much, how this is work.

Templates are utilized based on a universal layout file (layout.tpl) then customized modules and content template files.

Have a play with the default template to learn more

To answer the question, opencart doesn't use Smarty, but the design is just to call php variables set from the code within the surrounding html.

Controller - Sets the variable to the view
View - gets the variable for display
