/vqmod/checked.cache slowing the website down

Hi Forum

I've made some progress on the problem of our website being slow.
The file named 'checked.cache' (/public_html/vqmod/checked.cache) had grown so large that it was slowing the site down.
There is also another in the same directory named mods.cache (/public_html/vqmod/mods.cache 98KB).

I've set up cron job which deletes both .cache files every 30 minutes.

Does the fact that checked.cache got so big suggest a serious problem somewhere in the code?
If so - any suggestions on how I start to investigate?
