I've never seen an extension or theme that fixes this. I'm also annoyed by it, so I tried to fix it myself when 3.0 first came out, but it was too much work so I gave up. I'll try and get it into my OpenCart Admin Improvements extension when I have time to work on it again, but I'm not sure when that will be.
