Sometimes I get an internal server error alert without any details and there are no errors in the log. Is there a way to see what it is if I can keep triggering it?

Yes, there is, every Server has it's own Log Files, you just have to log in
to your Server Account, and check the Access- and Error-Logs! :D

There's a file called error_log which is created in the same folder as the base php file that is running so it's likely to be in / or /admin.
