bulk changes good or bad?

I need to update all my seo keywords for products/categories, currently all indexed at google etc. is this something i should do an wait for reindex or another way?

as long as you leave your seo url for categorys and product what is is, you can update anything.
it needs time to be reindexed in search results and when and you never know if you did it better or worse.

eg. I have used underscores in products and need to change them to hyphens

Just for records i did it like this changed all _ to - in the export and imported back

Also changed my htaccess to have

RewriteRule ^([^\_]+)_([^\_]+)(_.*)$ $1-$2$3 [N,DPI]
RewriteRule ^([^\_]+)_(.*)$ $1-$2 [L,R=301,DPI]

Works quite well and redirected for search engines

HI i know this is an old post but i have some urls that have underscores but i dont know which ones, hence would like to change via an easier method as mention above can you tell me which file you amended please?

also i take it image names shouldnt have underscores either and all mine do

Image names don't matter. If you want to modify your URL aliases run the following SQL query in phpMyAdmin:

Code: Select all

UPDATE url_alias SET keyword = REPLACE(keyword, '_', '-') WHERE keyword LIKE '%_%';
