Hi Guys

I am thinking of changing my website hosting company

So I want to do a backup first.

Is it just a question of going into my ftp program and downloading everything ?

Are there any tips or tricks ?

Thats a start you should do on a regular base switch or no switch.
Also opencart uses a database this is where all your product customers orders settings sitedocs and so on are stored.
i can imagine you want them saved as well.
so you have to perform a databse dump.
this can be done through oc admin go to configuration and find restore/backup.
here you can backup your databse in oc format.

backup can also bee done through a tool on your hosting panel called phpmyadmin, you can backup a raw databse dump.
i recommend both ways.

very often your wensite control panel has a backup option.
backing up here is also a good option just to have a extra backup ( you cant have enough)

Restoring to a new host is a different matter since new enviroment will be different to old host so you will have to follow other guidelines and it is not possible to just upload files and hope it wil work.

if you need help with moving sites give a PM and we will sort things out.

Thanks for that.

I would not have known about the open cart database backup.

My host does not have a control panel.

The one I am think of transferring to does.

They say they will do the transfer for me!

But I still want to have a backup in case.

And as you say we should have backups all the time anyway.
