Is there a simple guide on how to do this? I've not modded anything yet so it doesn't really make sense!

Use SEO URL's:
To use SEO URL's apache module mod-rewrite must be installed and you need to rename the htaccess.txt to .htaccess.

Do I have to download 'apache module mod-rewrite' ? Where would I find that?

Where is the htaccess.txt file that needs renamed?

Many web hosts running Linux have mod-rewrite installed by default. So it might already be available for you to use.

The htaccess file will be in the root directory for your store. Just rename it after you set the system to use SEO urls and set the SEO keyword in your product pages, categories and information pages. You will find it in the data tab of each.

When setting the seo keyword, don't use spaces. If you want to use several words, use a dash like star-wars-hat or stainless-steel-number-plate. Also, make sure each keyword is unique. So no two products should have the same SEO keyword.

Yes, it's in the files you uploaded. While viewing the files on your server via FTP, you should be able to right-click the file and do a 'rename'. That should do it.

I've put it back to how it was before without the SEO URLs.

The page was showing a Not found page.

was there more than 1 file that needs renamed?

Was the file named .htaccess and not just htaccess?

In addition to that, create a file on your server called phpinfo.php.

In that file put the following code and save.

Code: Select all

<?php
phpinfo();
?>
Then pull it up in a browser. http://www.youdomain.com/phpinfo.php

Once open, do a search in your browser (ctrl + f) for rewrite. This will quickly show you if you have rewrite installed.

it was .htaccess.txt

ah I think I know what I did wrong. I renamed it and left the dot at the end (I put .htaccess. instead of .htaccess)

It looks like it is working now.

Thank you for your help tdaubs :)

You're welcome.

I took a look and it does appear to be working now.

One last item, I recommend removing the phpinfo file or giving it a different name. Best not to give the whole world details on your hosting for security purposes.
