I searched and tried a few things but could not get anything to work.

Is there a guide or tut. to redirecting a page with SEO URL's turned on.

Thank you

If you're wanting to redirect from an old page to your new page (with SEO url's turned one), this is what I did:

http://forum.opencart.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=24877

I Image cmd-f, cmd-c, cmd-v, cmd-z + vQmod.

philbydevil,

I could not follow your post, you have several different command lines supposedly doing the same thing. I couldn't tell if the "?" goes on the redirect from or the redirect to.

" The only way I could get the redirects to work with SEO urls turned on was as follows:

redirect 301 /catalog/singapore.html /singapore? "

what is this ?

Here is my problem:
The search engine results show this URL.
www.sympathygiftsshop.com/shop/Memorial%20Ornaments
Apparently, since I left a space between memorial ornaments in the SEO keywords the %20 gets added between the space (other carts I have used put a dash or _)
After seeing this "%20" in the search results I changed the SEO keys to "Memorial-Ornaments"
www.sympathygiftsshop.com/shop/Memorial-Ornaments

Now I need to redirect /Memorial%20Ornaments to /Memorial-Ornaments

How do I do this with SEO turned on?

Normally I would not bother with it but the page ranks on page 1 for its primary keywords.

appreciate any help

The ? actually needed to be in the code for the redirect to work. If I left the ? off the "to" url, it redirected incorrectly, giving a 404 error.

For me, the correct way for the redirect to work is:

redirect 301
/catalog/singapore.html
http://www.mystore.com/singapore?

The layout is:

redirect type (301 = permanent)
old page (from)
new page (to - must have http://)

Another post that deals with this is:

http://forum.opencart.com/viewtopic.php ... ct#p111178

I haven't dealt with urls containing %20 (space), so I'm not sure which way will work for you.

I Image cmd-f, cmd-c, cmd-v, cmd-z + vQmod.

Have you checked if anyone is linking to www.sympathygiftsshop.com/shop/Memorial%20Ornaments

You can do that on yahoo using link:www.sympathygiftsshop.com/shop/Memorial%20Ornaments

If no one is linking to it, just change it. You don't need to do a 301 redirect. Honestly.

In Google's webmaster tools you can then tell them to remove the old link from their index. You can also submit a new sitemap with the new link in it and they will index the new link usually within a week.

Yes there are links to it. They don't show in yahoo yet but they are there (I put them there). There is around a hundred of them, otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Not worried about indexing, I just want the link juice to direct to the new page.

------
I tried that method on the post you linked to and couldn't get it to work,

Sounds like you've been doing a lot of commenting. Hopefully not on Wordpress blogs as they all have "no follow" on the links.

But you know what, Google doesn't care too much about links anymore - it's more interested in how well your site is coded and if your providing content relevant to the search terms used. I'd focus your energies there.

I have hardly any links to my store, yet I show up in the top three or four in Google because my site is well optimised and I provide quality content.

Just food for thought. ;)

commenting... lol

don't kid yourself, anyone can drop content on a page, even if your fishing for long tails. BUT it takes something a little special to deep link 10,000 links over the course of a year to pull in 10k to 50k uniques a month.

Setting up a site so G can crawl it easily is basic. Running diversified 2000 links a day to 85 domains aint.

Just saying

Anyway SEO not my problem, Coding tech issues are, just looking for a fix for this problem.

but thanks for the tip anyway

Oh, you obviously don't mean, for example, the "special" comment on this page that reviews Sky Player.

Am just teasing. If that's how you do business then feel free. If it works, it works.
But if coding tech issues are your problem then I'm just saying that you probably do have a problem with SEO, cos SEO is now more about coding and content than links.
But that's just my tuppence worth.

Here's how your redirect should look:

redirect 301 "/shop/Memorial Ornaments" http://www.sympathygiftsshop.com/shop/Memorial-Ornaments?

Just replace the %20 with a _space_ and make sure the old page is in inside " "

Tested it in my .htaccess and it worked fine.

Damn, and I wasn't gonna tell spam man that - just because I have to spend 10 minutes a day deleting posts from him and his friends.

No worries - will probably still be useful to someone more, shall we say, "reputable" in the future.

I didn't even think about that method of getting links... hmmm... :ponder: ...jokes.

I always thought that those comments/links were just to try and get people to click on them (mustn't have been think very hard)

I don't think they're worth much - as I said, Google is on to our friend, and his friends, and has changed the algorithm. That was what most of Caffeine was about - moving away from links and more towards quality content - they look at how your site is coded, and analyse the content to make sure it's written by a human. And links coming from irrelevant sites have very little weight.

I could tell he was a spammer as soon as I read the thread. I may be cynical, but have been dealing with it for years.

Just as an aside - here are a few more comments from the same page I linked to above. Do you think they were all from our friend or do you think he's just one of many people who pay someone else to do this for him?

They would have to be automatically generated wouldn't they: random name, link, text.... send to as many sites as possible.

It does tend to spoil the real comments (that I'm usually interested in reading).

I Image cmd-f, cmd-c, cmd-v, cmd-z + vQmod.

oh gawd ! boo hoo

Mr. spammer pleeze go away and don't hurt my shitty blog with your spam!

Grow up!

I clear thousands spam post every week from my blogs, I don't like it any more than the next guy, but place the blame where it belongs.

and btw. I'm always thinking to myself as I clear that shit from my blogs "If it doesn't work, why do they continue to do it?

and your right, low value links like spam, directories etc. don't push much juice but if your in a competitive niche you need them for other reasons.

Now I don't know what you do for a living, but when a client gives me a fat check to rank them for a set of keywords, they don't ask me how they ask me WHEN.

philbtdevil,

Thanks for the helping out, I really do appreciate it.

oh and just so you know, the spam you posted above comes from non moderated BB's and blogs that are scraped using a testing script that pings.

I don't use that method myself but its probably the least intrusive of all spam because most of the pages are abandoned. Which is why I don't use it, most of those links will be deindexed this year.
