modules explained

Could someone explain a bit about modules pls ?

I activated royal mail, first class recorded and standard parcel.

Do the postage prices come directly from Royal Mail, are these modules API's?

Some modules are API and some are just db table based. Usually the named ones like UPS, USPS, Australia Post, etc are all API and use live rate lookups
