A couple of hours ago, one of my website went down even though with no technical changes since successfully processing orders up until as late as last night...

Although the domain home page is functioning (which I use as just an about me page):
http://victordrummond.net/

The sub-domain shop home page is also visible (although some error within Opencart means I've never been able to get any content to display on this page):
http://yamaha-parts.victordrummond.net/

But click on any of the links and a 404/"page not found" is returned...

Upon further investigation I noticed that the www to http 301 re-direct is no longer working (I can now get a www. version of my index pages to display) and as I have SEF URL's enabled + route editor installed, I headed straight to the .htaccess file expecting to find something un-toward or changed but this file remains intact and nothing unusual to be found there...

So I contacted my hosting provider who advised that PHP on the server had been upgrade to version 5.3.25 within the past 24 hours and he thought it something to do with how "Symbolic Links" were being handled (whatever the heck they are ??? ), and although I can't recall what version of PHP was on before, I seem to remember it was 5.2.?..

Has anyone else experienced this issue or can shed any knowledge of what coulod be going on?

as a temporary solution you can set "use seo url's" to off in opencart settings, then contact developer of so called "route editor" module

Problem relates to security settings of following symlinks and the way they're handled within PHP5.3.x

Solution was to migrate the site back to a server with PHP 5.2.17 installed and all is good again.
