You can lose customers if you continue to say tomorrow, tomorrow!
Who makes promisses to their "payd" customers? You, not Daniel.

He provides a FREE and great program and he has no obligation to anyone, only to deliver a next release when he is ready.

I find it very offensive that there are complaints about the fact that the next release is not there yet and people start bashing Daniel and other community members just because of that.
As this has reached a level where it is no longer acceptable I urge you to first count to 10 until you post your comments!

by now most people should realize that OpenCart is different from a commercial solution in the following aspects:

1) there is no confirmation on release date for a particular release, until you actually can see and download a copy of the particular release
2) no promise whether the release is going to be stable, until you test it yourself, or many users have tested, and they claim so
3) don't base your decision or commitment or plans on what people tell you or what you heard

if you have the above understanding, you will have a lot less stress.

after all, Daniel does a great development job. if you like OpenCart, stick around, and if you don't, there are plenty options out there you can choose. no point to get upset, especially now you understand the difference between the OpenCart and other commercial solutions.

I've been reading this thread and wanted to stay out of it... too many people saying too much bull^&%!

However, all these comments about customers... I have to say something now:

- If you are "selling" an OpenCart webshop to a customer and you convinced them to wait for a next release this is really on yourself, then, if the release gets postponed, you go back to your customer and give them a choice:
1) Wait a bit longer
2) Roll on the older version

This really isn't rocket science guys! Any customer will understand that if the stuff is free (or at least a lot cheaper then a commercial shop) that concessions have to be made.
Now ofcourse, if you are selling this shop for the same price as a commercial shop, then it's REALLY on you...

Anyway... just quit the bitching and moaning and just explain it to your customers... it happens, nothing you can do about it, Daniel is doing the best he can.

You need the shop to be stable NOW? install 1.3.2,!
You have some more time? Wait for 1.4.1 and test it yourself!

Whatever you decide, the moment you make money of it, donate some to Daniel!

Hi all,

After reading all these posts I felt I had to comment on what has been said... I downloaded OpenCart 1.4.0 for the first time last week after been a user of Zen Cart for a considerable amount of time. I must say from what I tested and seen so far, I am highly impressed and would like to say well done to Daniel for developing such a user friendly script with a nice and clean interface!

I do feel after reading the comments on this forum, that the script is not ready for me to make the switch from Zen Cart, well certainly not to 1.4.0 anyway, however as it has been suggested, I shall look at one of the older, hopefully more stable versions.

Whilst I look forward to the future release where hopefully we will see some of features requested been implemented and the bugs ironed out, I understand that these things take time. I suggest to those that seem too inpatient to wait like the rest of us, find a commercial solution & pay for it, otherwise stop moaning!

Best Regards,
David Catherall,

Hi,
the question Daniel asked in the first message is:

"Let me know what bugs are found so I can do a few quick releases with the fixes in."

So all OFF TOPIC messages can be deleted or moved to a new Moan or Happy Forum, that would be the case if i was a moderator here.... People that are talking about making no profit from a SHOP script.... please come to your senses....

So please delete or move this message as all other OFF TOPIC messages....

(try to find the reported bugs in this 29 pages ... pfff )

Daniel, take your time, i've seen that you need 3 / 4 months between releases that's fine, i am using 1.4.0. now and i am very happy with it!

5cts from me,
Alex

Well, I have one suggestion, It may have been suggested before. I think it is wise to have two options in the Download Section.

1) Latest Build (Eg: 1.4.0)
2) Stable Build (Make it Bold !) (Eg: 1.3.2 or 1.3.4?)

Maybe, this will sort out all the issues faced by users who prefer Opencart for Commercial Purposes, and yea 'Maybe
'
So, lets say 1.4.0 is now Open for Public Testing (Still a Beta). Users provide feedback, When everything works fine, Make it stable.

The talk of a STABLE V1.3.2 or a pretty good V1.3.4 is great. And suggesting that those of us who simply recommend it to our clients for no profit, or those who add to it for profit use one of those earlier versions definitely has some merit.

BUT - if you go to the Download Page, if you click Download above, you get a link to download V1.4.0.

Not a mention that it's a alpha, or a beta, or any warning of any sort that it is not the latest stable distribution script.

So, telling people to use an earlier, stable version would have a lot more validity if such a version were readily available.

Many developers have a string of optional downloads available, with one often being labeled the latest stable version and newer ones being labeled as alpha or beta. There is usually also a changelog available so people can see the fixes and added features from one version to another.

It is well and good to say leave Daniel to his work, I agree. But possibly one or more of his mods, assistants, volunteers, mates, whatever they may be could undertake a project of a changelog and restoring the previous versions to the Download page.

In my case, I do have a 1.3.4 and have installed that for several clients. But I also urge my clients to join the forum of whatever cart they are using and they come here and see V1.4.0 is the only download option.

I understand it's free. I understand it's open source. I also understand that many of the moderators have a vested interest in selling their own templates and commercial additions and modifications. More power to them, I've bought many mods for CubeCart over the years and appreciate them daily. My point here is that they benefit from OpenCart possibly more than Daniel, so why can't they manage something of the sort I mentioned above?

A download(S) page with history of the versions and notations of which are truly stable versions. It would be in their own interest to do so.

How about they check here for downloads as well:
http://code.google.com/p/opencart/downloads/list
All prior versions are still available from the looks.

I would be happy to work out a changelog and test out the first days worth of bugs. That is why when we get the internal release, we will do that. To avoid another topic like this one.

And they know about that how?

We are here on the opencart.com forum, with the opencart header up top and a menu item saying Download. That is certainly where I would look.

And without taking the time to read the thread, or even to look at the forum, most visitors to the opencart.com home page would go to the Download page and assume they were downloading a current stable version, not a buggy alpha.

You obviously know about code.google. I'd never heard of it before and I am online 18/7/365. But I do know how to google opencart and click the link to the home page.

We are not talking about coders and developers, we are talking about USERS who want to have a working cart for their (probably) first or second online venture. They google opencart, they go to the site, they go to Download and they get a buggy script. Now just who does that benefit?

Speak for yourself ;)

First: I have no commercial interest in OpenCart other than that I want this project to be a succes and hopefuly in the near future I can move my own shop to it.

Second: Everyone, commercial interest or not, will benefit from what we all can do to help Daniel to have a stabel release out to the rest of the community. That is why some of us are working with Daniel to get some changes in progress and with one of the first to be a beta-test project.

Let us not forget that the more OpenCart is known and used the more responsibility rests on the shoulders of Daniel to have every release to be as stable as can be. This means lesser questions about issues, easyer upgrade routes etc.
This can only happen if some changes are made and this is done by taking baby-steps to make sure it is done properly.

I think you'll find there's a lot of 'lurkers' on these forums, like myself, comparing features and making decisions - many of those based on commercial motives.

For my part, I've been testing and watching for a few weeks, weighing up the strengths of Opencart with a number of other carts out there.

The agency I work for have an in-house system which I inherited and have pushed forward - but it's past it's prime. (no SEO URLS, too many hacked features, forked code base etc.)
... but collectively we have a massive amount of experience working with numerous clients for whom we maintain shops. We're not just dabbling with 'ma & pa' outfits.

We could adopt Opencart and churn features back into the community, however, with employees and other bills to pay, we're still deciding.

After evaluating a number of systems, we've decided we may redevelop our own in-house bespoke solution from the ground up, if so, we intend to keep a close eye on Opencart, as there's an active community and ideas to be gained and ideas to share.

I'm fairly certain there's more than a little commercial motive behind opencart, despite the fact it's an open source offering - we all have to eat!
I made use of the contact form here to inquire about commercial support - but heard nothing back for over a week now - but hey, that shows there's very much of a commercial interest in opencart. It would be crazy to do it any other way, unless your a nutty hippy who is clueless about money!

... it's a confusing and competitive market - I've spent the last month researching what's out there - and as a company, are still debating which way to go with this.

I suspect re-building our own will win the day.

hope you don't have a tight deadline as creating a cart is a much larger project than you might imagine.

Just curious what carts you compared and what made you decide to announce what I've qouted above.

As I have seen many, if not all, free and Open Source carts I'm certain that building one yourself is, and I'm using Xsecrets words "creating a cart is a much larger project than you might imagine".

@BBMATT - O0 Dude why re-invent the wheel. If yours is past its sell by date, why would you revamp it when you could use OC as a base? Maybe you should stop being a lurker and get into OC if you can be of use. Who knows perhaps your mods etc would make money. OC is by far and away the best open source cart system out there and as far as I can see its better than most paid scripts too.

I think Daniel is making money of OC...of course he is and he deserves to. However he has already said in previous threads he is commited to this being an opensource project.

I agree with you on this one. The download page should have a link to the code.google.com page of downloads. It's only because I know how to navigate the google code page that I know about the file list. But you are right, most people don't.
