Everyone who uses OC should do this even if it's for personal use. They should contribute some cash to Daniel, this way we can keep him as our employee doing the most important task in our business.

Hopefully the support he gets will prevent him from selling his work to a blue chip or well funded start-up.

Someone could fork the last available version and continue on. It's GNU GPL. I highly doubt Daniel would do something like that.

will i be able to upgrade from 1.3.4 easily, i'm totally new to all of this?

the only module that might need tweaking is the import/export feature

I do agree if we are making money off of this project it would be a good idea to put some aside for Daniel, but to say working for free will raise more money is just crazy.

I feel sorry for this poor 'ole chap. ...Go download yourself a copy of SilverStripe 2.3.4 and have some fun with that for a while, while you wait on Open Cart 1.3.5. Or if you're really feeling adventurous, download 2.4.0 alpha and have it a go.
