Order confirmation emails not sending consistently

Hi everybody - we run a 2.0.3.1 installation on bluehost cloud hosting. Our email configuration seems to be correct, as the store is sending emails for new affiliates, new customers, affiliate commissions, etc. Those emails seem to send out instantly and without any issues. For some reason, however, we only get order confirmation emails for about 1 out of 10 orders. 
I know these are more complicated HTML emails generated from the order.tpl file in catalog/view/theme, whereas the other ones are plain text, but I cannot understand why only some of the confirmation emails are sent perfectly, while others are skipped completely - it's not as if they are just lagging or delayed in sending. I've discussed the issue with our hosting company, but they say everything looks fine as far as the mail server is concerned, so it must be a CMS issue according to them. Is anybody familiar with this issue? Thanks!
