Flash of an error message that doesn't seem right

Hi. I installed opencart, changed the appropriate permissions, deleted the install folder, and all checks were green on install. Got all the way to a "working" store but I cannot add categories or products.
Whenever I do so, I get a momentary flash of a red error message saying something like "___ needs at least 3 characters and no more than 255 characters". It doesn't stay and it doesn't apply. I have to keep hitting save in order to read it.

I have php version 5.2.something, am on bluehost.com, magic quotes gpc is off (and I copied the .ini file to all parent directories just to make sure). So what am I missing?

I think it has do with the german lang, because you need to enter both. If you don't need it , then just delete it and the message will go away. Well at least in my case...
