Check your "category_to_store" table. If there are no entries in there, the categories won't show.

Can I make edits to the sql file using phpmyadmin without damaging the consistency of opencart or will any changes made from here cause issues with opencart

Resolved using phpedit to find and replace all entries of meta_keywords to meta_keyword and nothing tragic happened still had some restore error but the main issue was fixed. Thank You for your help
