I spoke with hostgator and they said they do not support this cart so unlike zen cart i cannot just go to fantastico deluxe and add it which is a bit of a pain as i have limited knowledge in this area -

how do i get this to work in hostgator?

Thanks Mark

Just follow the installation guide, it's fairly straightforward

Jay's right. A 1-click install just cuts out a few of the steps for you, but it is straightforward to do yourself.

1. Go to Cpanel at hostgator: find the MySQL database wizard, and follow the steps to set up a database. Keep a note of the username, password, DB name (note: your host may add a prefix to these).

2. FTP the contents of the Opencart upload folder to the appropriate place in your webspace - eg public_html/shop

3. Browse to your store homepage and follow the onscreen instructions. You need your database info, and you need to decide on an admin username & password for the store.
One more thing - in the top box, database host = localhost (in 95% of cases).

4. Delete the install folder when you've finished.

If more details are needed, drop by the forum again. Good luck

I host dozens of OpenCart shop owners and do the installs for no cost. I'll be glad to host for you, cost as low as $4.49 per month.

I don't come here to sell, but if you need a host you can count on, who is also a forum mate, I'll be glad to do the install for you.

I have servers in both the US and the UK.

Hello Moggin, I think I did exactly all that and made sure to write down the db name, username , password, then uploaded the content of the upload folder and not the folder itself, but it says : "Error: Could not connect to the database please make sure the database server, username and password is correct!"
I have checked and rechecked, it is absolutely certain these names are correct.
Should I start the process all over again?
thank you!

You moved! Anyway, no, don't give up yet :)

Hard to know what's wrong, but try this: go back to cPanel, and go to MySQL Databases (not the wizard this time, the other one). Have a look at the info shown there. It's likely that your host has added yourusername_ to the front of your database name etc: it's easy to miss this.

The whole 'yourusername_dbname' etc needs to go into the boxes in the install screen. BUT if that's not it, drop by again...

PS One more thing - in the top box, database host = localhost

Did you put the host as localhost? cpanel won't tell you to do that. It could be a hosting issue (although unlikely) so send your host the credentials you are trying to connect with, and see if they spot the mistake

Purely another guess, but in cpanel your username and db name is prefixed with your cpanel username, so the user bob in the database mydb who logs in with the username robert1 to get into cpanel would have robert1_bob for the username, and robert1_mydb for the database name. Do your username and database name have prefixes?

I was able to install OC from my Hostgator/Cpanel. Just search for quickInstall under the Software and Services tab. See image.
