I've got an opencart installation (1.4.9.5) and I've created a new store running 1.5.6. I'm wondering whether it's possible to import all the products from my previous install to the new one? Including images, and all the options?

it is possible to upgrade to last version.
always work on a copy of your database.
you will have to upgrade going trough all major verions so first to 1.5 then 1.5.2 1.5.3 until you reach desired version, also after upgrade to1.5 a other update script is needed to convert all product tags.

Upgrading inline is always easier than trying to port certain bits over from an older version. You'll have to upgrade that 1.4.9.4 shop to the same version as the 1.5.6 version you currently have, then, assuming you don't have custom mods that add additional columns, the column mapping should match between the 2 formats. Then you can export from the old db and import into the new db with relative ease.
