Looking for way to add text overlay to all my product page thumbnail images

I'm looking for a way to tag my product page images with a text description and then overlay the text on the images. Sorry if there is already an existing solution to this but I haven't seen it. What I am wanting to display is shown here -->

I realize that the images don't have a description field associated with them in the database so any solution would have to involve a custom field addition to the database or some sort of reference to an external file. I would be happy with an iframe link to an external page and a change to the product.tpl file to display the page (which uses a custom flex slider) but am not sure how to go about doing that. Any developers out there want to take this on (or sell me your pre-existing module for this)?
