2.3.0.2 p.date_modified workaround

Wanting products to be sorted by p.date_modified on the category page.

Currently p.date_modified isn't working and apparently hasn't been for a while, I have tried adding into the product.php (model), etc with no success myself.

Does anyone know a way to get this working?
