I use the mollie extension for payment. This worked fine until about a month ago. Nothing really had changed, it just stopped working. Everything goes fine including payment, but on the redirect page "/index.php?route=extension/payment/mollie_ideal/callback&order_id=157" I get an HTTP ERROR 500 and the payment is not confirmed. However, when the client cancels on the payment page, the same redirect url works well.
In the database I see that the order was added with order_status_id=0. However, it doesn't shop up in the Admin tool Orders list.
I have no clue how to fix this or where to look for...

Contact the extension developer to resolved this issue.

It seems not to be the extension. If I install a completely new shop with the same extension, it works fine. If I then connect it to the original database the problem is exactly the same. There seems to be a problem with the database...

Do you see a problem with the database with fresh OC installation?

No, with a fresh installation and using the extension, everything is okay. However I like to use as much as possible from the old data: products, customers, orders and settings. And I still don't know where the problem initiated. Might be since I updated some tax settings...

Using the access logs are the key to track in the problems. You could also add some extensions that provides the display logs by the error handlers.

How about disabling the extension and trying the same or using something else? Or maybe somewhere there is a log where the error is described, maybe in the extension folder.
