I have been on 1.5.6 with a custom theme with modules designed for this version. I am among that last to have a responsive site and want to make it responsive.

I figure it's probably a good time to upgrade Opencart to a newer version.... but which one? I'm thinking 2.0 or 2.2, or should I just stay where i am and install a new theme that is responsive that was made for 1.5.6?

What are the benefits of version 2 over 1.5.6?

Thank you.

Well, there is nothing from keeping you, trying it out, it still comes for free. :D
And for certain OC v.2.x Versions, free Upgrade Tools for your DB also exist, so,
you so don't even have to pay, to get a Database Content work again with some OC v.2 Versions.

You just would have to make sure, to disable/remove existing 1.5.x Modules and VqMods, in
a copied 1.5 Shop DB first, since their Content would no longer be valid, if some of their work
changes anything in a DB, or wherever else.
Just a wild idea... ;)
Good Luck!

Thanks for the link/info.

So, I am having second thoughts... what's the benefit to upgrading opencart to 2.2?

My site is working fine/great... no issues.

I successfully migrated up using Oscommerce and then migrated from OScommerce to Opencart... I know how much of a pain it is...

Well, the Main benefit of OC 2.2 would be, to have a fully responsive Layout,
in the Front Side and Admin Sections. In addition, OC 2.2 will have OcMod already
built-in, an equivalent of VqMod, meaning, that one does not need VqMod anymore,
since OcMod does more less the same, just in a slightly different way of 'handling' things.

But if you are familiar with OC v.1.5.6, you might only update your Code to latest
Version OC v.1.5.6.5_rc, to so have the most secure and stable 1.5.x Version on hand.
And then, you could add a 'Responsive' or 'Bootstrap' type Front Side Theme, to enable
mobile Users, to see your pages in all Resolutions. And if you need a responsive Admin
layout, such also exists for free. Or then use PEKU's free OpenCart EDGE, it's a v.1.5.6.5_rc
with an aready built-in OC v.2.x Bootstrap Theme ( and OcMod! , but VqMod as well).
The only disadvantage could be the need, to partly rewrite some Extensions a little, to make
their THEME-related Linkings match the new Theme Designs.
It still has a very few minor misses, but otherways, it works well.
Take a little time, and read my multiple Posting on this, to find out, what exists, and
what has proved to work well.
