Hello.

I'm new to OpenCart and my intention is to create a very quick and simple pilot project, or proof of concept, and if it goes well to turn it into a more permanent online shop. So my intention is to find a hosting service free or very low-cost, ideally with some options to upgrade to more fully-fledged versions with a fair price. Until now I only briefly saw Arvixe, but they don't have a initial free option.

Can someone reccomend a service with this caraecteristics? I work with Apache and Linux regularly, I don't know much about PHP but I do work with other languages, so do a full instalation and setup on my own should not be a problem.

Thanks in advance.

Well ... the list could be very long!

Most basic Shared Hosting package are very cheap nowadays and there are lots of them. If you really need one now, in my opinion, it is a good thing to make sure the Datacentre is in the same country you live in. Just because targeting customers through search engines could be easier. But this is not essential ...

My best advice would be, since you just want to test things and you are not ready for production yet, to simply setup a local server on your home PC/Mac! It is completely free and fairly easy to setup.

I use XAMPP myself, but there are other alternatives ...

I would suggest to get a shared hosting plan for 1 month from here:
https://coolicehost.com/web-hosting.html
because they are the best hosting from technical point of view (technologies, speed, security)
and if your project is OK just upgrade to yearly plan.
You have to register a domain name and this is an important and difficult part of your project, so if you aren't ready to go live start with local server first as suggested by villagedefrance.
