The docs are valid for v.2.x and 3.x only.

1. as it seems, there is some modification in place - because ic a standard installation such an error does not happen
2. have you enabled to display error messages - which should be avoided in any case!
3. have you already checked the error log (of OpenCart) and also the server log (of your server)
