I have also facing the same problem. But, I can't keep disable the ".htaccess file" of my website.
So, I got the another solution for this without disabling ".htaccess file".

I also tried this one RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^sitemap$ index.php?route=information/sitemap [R=301,L] but it doesn't work. It doesn't work... I want to change http://www.example.com/index.php?route=information/sitemap into http://www.example.com/sitemap for this I write the following code.... But, it also keep the parent/subcategory/ format in the product url's canonical that I didn't want.
So, for this what I have to do?

thanks Simon, But it made the Sub Category URL as separate URL that mean it's not including it's parent in its canonical url.
