Your host is correct. You have a few options: 1. Run the reports in the dead of night when no one is browsing the site. 2. Pay a developer to attempt to optimise these reports. 3. Have used ADV and it's not working out. They are quite good but we find them non-performant and they can even slow down the website. And herein lies the issue.
